Between Lines is a compact yet multi functional studio located in Mangwon, Seoul. Although purposed for the use of 1-2 people, the scenario of a shared compact space can be narrated in a many different ways. Adapting various programmes to small spaces are becoming more vital in the modern life. We wanted to portray how easily and well a space can be shifted to different programs with the use of soft partitions and furniture placements.

‘틈 사이’는 마포구 망원동에 위치한 소규모 작업실이다. 2-3인용밖에 되지 않지만 컴팩트한 공용 공간의 시나리오는 은근히 무궁무진하다. 협소한 공간의 이용도의 가 치는 계속 오를것을 염두한다 . 작은 변화로 작은 한 공간에서 얼마나 다양한 프로그램과 대화들이 탄생할수 있는지 보여주고 싶었다.

Between Soft & Hard Walls

Dividing the already tight, (measuring barely 27 sqm) space was not the most obvious answer to creating a multifunctional studio. However, in order to accommodate diverse activities simultaneously within the space, a visual isolation was necessary at minimum. The solution was to extend hefty white curtains along the front full window into the back-wall to function as flexible soft walls. The temporary walls ended up visually expanding the room, and warmed up the initially stale atmosphere. The name <Between Lines> refers to the spatial moments of surprises that the solid and soft walls frame.

7평도 안되는 면적을 다시 나누는것이 망설여지기도 했지만, 2인이상 사용하기에 부담되지 않은 다용도 공간을 연출하기 위해서는 시각적인 분리가 꼭 필요했다. 해답은 전면 유리를 가리는 묵직한 암막 커텐을 뒷 벽까지 연장시켜 임시적/ 변화가능한 soft wall 말랑말랑한 벽을 만들어주는것이였다. 흰커텐은 자유로운 공간분리에 이어 차가운 분위기를 녹여주고, 천장을 높혀주는 효과를 준다. “틈 사이”는 단단하고 무른 벽들의 유기적인 위치에 따라 하얀 선들과 면적사이 노출되는 재밌는 관경들이 좋아서 지어준 프로젝트명이다.

For a small space, the interior design & architecture determines the value and potential entirely. 작은 내부 공간은 효율적인 설계에 따라 이용도의 가치와 범위가 크게 좌지우지된다.

A White Canvas

The white interior is a popular aesthetic “look” , but for a studio/office space like <Between Lines> a 3 dimensional blank canvas was essential, to allow diverse objects of inspiration, tools, and study models to be most visible (yes that includes wine bottles).

새하얀 인테리어는 일반적으로 많은 사람들이 선호하는 미학적 취향이다. 하지만 “틈 사이”와 같은 작업실은 하얀 벽과 가구들이 공간적인 기능으로 필수적인 요소였다. 영감을 주는 여러책, 물건들, 그리고 수 많은 모형들이 주인공이 되어야하는 공간이기 때문이다.
